What MOTS-c is
MOTS-c is short for mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c. It is also written MOTS-C and MOTSc, and all three spellings refer to the same peptide. It belongs to the small class known as mitochondrial-derived peptides, so called because the coding sequence sits inside mitochondrial DNA rather than in the nuclear genome.
The molecule is a linear chain of sixteen amino acids with the sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. Its formula is C101H152N28O22S2 and its average molecular mass is roughly 2174,6 g/mol, which puts it mid-range among the peptides in our catalogue: longer than the four residues of SS-31 and far shorter than the forty-three of TB-500. Two of the sixteen residues are methionine, which is where both sulfur atoms come from, and four are basic residues: three arginine and one lysine. The peptide therefore carries a net positive charge at neutral pH.
There is no ring closure, no fatty-acid chain and no DAC extension, so it is handled as a plain lyophilised peptide rather than as a modified analogue.
Where it sits in the catalogue
The closest relation is humanin, the other mitochondrially encoded peptide we carry. Humanin is read from the 16S rRNA region rather than the 12S and runs to twenty-four amino acids instead of sixteen, so the two are related by origin and not by sequence. SS-31 is often filed alongside both, yet it is a synthetic tetrapeptide, encoded in no genome. Further out sit two compounds that are not peptides: NAD+, a dinucleotide coenzyme covered on our buy NAD page, and 5-Amino-1MQ, a small methylquinolinium molecule. Form, handling and storage
The 40 mg vial arrives as a lyophilised cake. Add bacteriostatic water slowly, letting it run down the inside wall of the vial rather than firing it straight onto the cake, then swirl gently until the powder has gone into solution. Shaking is unnecessary and worth avoiding. Sealed, dry and dark, an unopened vial keeps at room temperature. Once reconstituted the material belongs in the fridge and not the freezer, since repeated freezing and thawing is hard on a dissolved peptide.
The pen comes as a prepared cartridge in a pen body, so there is no reconstitution step. Keep it between 2 and 8 °C, upright, away from direct light, and do not freeze it. The 120 mg blend is lyophilised as well and is handled exactly like the plain vial.
