What melanotan is
Melanotan 1, written MT1 and known in the literature as afamelanotide, is a synthetic analogue of alpha-MSH, a naturally occurring melanocortin peptide of thirteen amino acids. It keeps the full thirteen residue backbone with two substitutions, norleucine in place of methionine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7, which is why papers call it [Nle4, D-Phe7]-alpha-MSH. The chain is linear, acetylated at the N-terminus and amidated at the C-terminus. CAS 75921-69-6.
Melanotan 2, written MT2 or MT-II, is shorter and built differently. It is a cyclic heptapeptide, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2, in which a lactam bridge between the aspartate and lysine side chains closes the ring. Six residues of the parent sequence are absent, and the ring holds the rest in a fixed shape. Molecular formula C50H69N15O9, mass around 1024 g/mol, CAS 121062-08-6.
Two adjacent names for different molecules, then: one long and linear, one short and cyclic, sharing the His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp core. As vials and as nasal kits both arrive as a white lyophilised powder in a sealed vial; the pens are the exception, holding the peptide already in solution.
Where it sits in the catalogue
The nearest neighbour chemically is bremelanotide, listed here as PT-141. It is the same ring as melanotan 2 with one change at the tail, the C-terminal amide replaced by a free carboxyl group, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH. That single functional group is the whole structural difference.

Form, handling and storage
